Wisdom of
the Elders: Traditional Healing Practices in Mexico*
A Program sponsored by Goddard College, Vermont
Building a peace bridge between the North and the South for conscious,
cross-cultural exploration and the discovery of new ways of seeing
the world and each other. |
1/30/2007 In the mountains of
Mexico, Arlene Rose Curley, Director of Greenshire and also a
healer in various modalities, joined a group of 16 people to
learn about the traditional and holistic healing practices and
alternative community health models of Mexico in and around Tepoztlán,
Mexico. Located one hour south of Mexico City in the Tepozteco
mountains and the Chichinautzin bio-reserve of the Cuaunahuac
bioregion, this area is a fascinating microcosm for learning
about the triumphs of maintaining diverse healing practices,
traditional culture and bio-diverse ecosystems.

"We came to learn about Meso-American healing arts. That was accomplished far beyond my expectations. What I didn't expect was that I myself would be healed emotionally and spiritually on very deep levels." - past participant |
We were based in the beautiful,
mountainside eco-village of Huehuecoyotl (www.huehuecoyotl.net),
a residential community founded in the state of Morelos over
20 years ago by an international group of artists and activists.
Huehue is devoted to promoting community life while building
creative alternatives to economic globalization and monoculture.
The community of over 30 people contains inspiring examples of
alternatives: eco-construction techniques; water systems; solar
energy; consensus decision making; and organic gardens. |

Our
orientation to traditional Mexican medicine and learning activities
included Mexican cooking, traditional midwifery and shamanistic
aspects of the Meshica tradition. Also highlighted were
the contemporary applications of four practices: traditional
Mexican massage, limpias (spiritual cleansings), temazcal
(sweat lodge) and regional herbalism and ethno-botany (plant
walks and making medicinal preparations). |
