Ceremony Ceremony
is a large part of the healing traditions of these people
Reaching inward to the Soul level, where the cause of
disease begins with the energetic imbalance of the body,
they find peace through their traditional rituals and ceremonies.

Sounding the conch shell calls together
community for a variety of purposes
Greeting the morning sun, beginning the
dance, starting the sweat lodge
|
| In ceremony, burning copol (resin from
a tree) soothes the energies of the body with its purifying white
smoke. |

 |
The Amate tree grows on a steep cliff
on the northern boundary of Hue Hue. It is here that a candle
is kept burning in the womb of the tree, and a special Mandala
of the four directions is kept. |
In a sacred ceremony around a copol-burning
fire, a pipe-carrier of the indigenous ways invited us to smoke
our prayers in silence. |

 |
The temazcal (sweat
lodge) is built of adobe and is used in ceremony to cleanse the
body and soul. Afterwards, a traditional feast of fruits, vegetables
and lentil soup (with bananas!) was served. |
